About the Decision-Making Support Tool (DST)

The Decision-Making Support Tool (DST) is a simple chat assistant that helps people in rural areas choose the right digital technologies—especially connectivity—for their farms, businesses or communities. Instead of reading through many reports and vendor pages, you can ask questions in plain language and get suggestions that fit your situation.

DST blends evidence from COMMECT Living Labs (real trials on farms and in forests), survey and interview findings, and a curated knowledge base with modern language-model technology. It asks a few clarifying questions and then proposes practical options aligned with user needs and EU socio-economic and environmental goals.

Everyday questions DST can help with

  • “Our farm is in a valley and the phone signal is weak — what are reliable options to connect sensors and workers?”
  • “We need soil-moisture and pump monitoring across large fields — which sensors and networks are realistic, and what should we plan for?”
  • “How can we track livestock transports across borders where coverage changes?”
  • “For vineyards on hills, which connectivity supports drones and mapping without overspending?”
  • “Which solutions reduce fuel use or water waste, and how do we measure benefits?”

What you receive

  • One to three connectivity options (e.g., 4G/5G public or private, satellite, LoRaWAN, or a mix), with pros and cons.
  • Device and gateway suggestions that work together, plus simple data-flow steps for deployment.
  • KPIs to track (uptime, coverage, water/fuel savings) and notes on cost, sustainability and maintenance.
  • Pointers to relevant COMMECT pilots and deliverables for deeper reading.

How it works

  1. Describe your context (farm/business type, location and coverage, terrain, needs and goals).
  2. DST combines your inputs with COMMECT evidence and its knowledge base.
  3. Receive a short list of options with next steps, KPIs and things to watch out for.

Who is it for?

  • Farmers and producer groups
  • Advisors, cooperatives and rural SMEs
  • Municipal and regional stakeholders

When to use it

  • Planning a new deployment or upgrade
  • Troubleshooting coverage or reliability
  • Preparing a funding or tender proposal
  • Scaling a pilot to more sites

Good to know

  • Vendor-neutral guidance (DST does not sell hardware)
  • Plain language — no jargon
  • Works on web and common messaging apps
