The COMMECT team, represented by Alya Bolowich from the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), recently presented exciting research at the SETAC Europe LCA Symposium 2024 in Gothenburg. The symposium, organized by the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, focuses on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies and their applications across various sectors.

At the event, the team presented a poster highlighting the environmental impact of precision agriculture and connectivity solutions. Through this research, the COMMECT project is assessing the life cycle of various information and communications technology (ICT) components used in agriculture. This includes sensors, weather stations, and connectivity tools that are used in the COMMECT Living Labs.

One of the findings from this research is the environmental impact of seemingly small components. For example, the use of gold wiring in sensors and the length of cables were found to be large contributors to emissions. This highlights the importance of considering even the smallest components when assessing the environmental impact of precision agriculture technologies.
